Originally code named as the "Dolphin", the Nintendo GameCube is Nintendo's fourth home videogames console and it was launched on 14 September 2001 in Japan, 18 November 2001 in North America, and 3 May 2002 in Europe. The GameCube is a pure gaming console without the bells and whistles of DVD drives and an online service as seen in Microsoft's Xbox and Sony's PlayStation 2. As such, the GameCube was the cheapest of the three 'sixth generation' consoles. As of March 2006, Nintendo has sold 20 million units of the GameCube, yet it still languishes in third place behind the PS2 and Xbox.
