"Um, Major... there's something unsightly dangling from your nostrils." (Credit: Eric Rice) If you're an Xbox 360 owner with a HD-DVD drive add-on, sources tell us that your console’ll prompt you into update action this very morning, thanks to a prompt offering you the chance to upgrade the standalone Blu-ray-beating accessory in a number of ways.
As well as a selection of sound and compatibility improvements, the update will allow (newly gloating) Xbox 360 Elite owners to watch their favourite DVDs in 1080p via the machine's HDMI port, a resolution that any respectable commission-based electronics salesperson will tell you is "so crisp it's just like looking out of a window! Look!"
Courtesy of Microsoft employee and resident Xbox 360 guru, Major Nelson, here are the list of changes you can look forward to:
* Added option for users to select from the following audio output formats via TOSLINK or HDMI:
- Digital Stereo (2 channel PCM)
- Dolby Digital 5.1
- DTS 5.1
- WMA Pro
* Added "Dynamic Range Control" toggle for digital audio output
* Improved HD-DVD networking support
* Improved HD-DVD title compatibility
* Improved performance with MPEG-4 AVC / H.264
* 1080p via HDMI is supported on the Xbox 360 Elite with HDCP compliant displays
* Improved parental controls
If you aren't connected to Xbox Live in order to download the benfefits provided by the patch upgrade, there should be details on how to receive it using a different method via Xbox.com very soon. Leave no man behind!
