What happens when you cross one of the world's biggest game releases, a huge film and television firm and a popular animated comedy? Why, it's 20th Century Fox's plans to make a wad of Family Guy episodes available for download on Xbox Live in the run-up to the release of Halo 3.
The first two seasons of the programme featuring the trials and tribulations of the Griffin family, Glen ‘giggidy giggidy’ Quagmire and co. will be available to purchase on the Microsoft Xbox 360 online service beginning Monday September 03.
"With the launch of Halo 3 and the launch of the new season of Family Guy coming out, the timing really worked well for this one," said Jamie McCabe, executive VP at Fox, noting that the two's shared 18-34 audience is "about as perfect a demographic fit as we can get.
Talk about perfect timing. Microsoft expects Halo 3 to gross an estimated $77 million USD in its first weekend on sale - and for 160 Microsoft Points ($2 USD) per episode, we can just imagine the ear-to-ear smirks of 20th Century Fox shareholders as they lap up the income from an audience of what might as well be sitting ducks.
GamerSquad hates the idea of it, but will we be able to resist such cynical corporate business tactics? The answer is not "yes." Sob.
