Take a good look, 121 million of 'em are gonna take over the world
Research firm Strategy Analytics and its Connected Home Devices service has predicted that Sony’s dominance in the home videogame market will continue unabated by the attentions of the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii—and it will continue in grand style.
Despite Microsoft’s clear twelve-month head start on both Sony and Nintendo in the next-gen race (in which time it’s amassed Xbox 360 unit sales approaching 10 million), Strategy Analytics indicate that the long-term figures will vastly favour Sony and the PlayStation 3, with Nintendo lagging some way behind in third.
The prediction figures show the PlayStation 3 surpassing Microsoft’s market lead at the end of 2007 and rising to almost 60% of the market share by the year 2012. In terms of units sales across this generation’s lifespan (ending 2012), the PlayStation 3 is predicted to absolutely demolish the competition with 121.8 million unit sales, while the Xbox 360 will amass 59.7 million sales, and the Wii will continue Nintendo’s downward home console spiral with a miserable 23.3 million units.
Other predictions offered up by Strategy Analytics include: 9 million total console sales through the 2006 Christmas period; 39.1 million consoles sold throughout 2007; 204.8 million consoles sold by 2012; and 50% of all console sales emanating from North America through this generation.
Remember dear Xbox 360 and Wii fan, the above horror story is merely a prediction—and the guys at Strategic Analytics are probably all raging Sony fanboys who clearly haven’t been paying attention to the ‘real world’.
