Things are looking decidedly rosier for Sony’s machine.
The corks will be popping over at Sony Towers today, after it was revealed that the PlayStation 3’s recent $100 price cut in the US had boosted sales of the console by a meaty 135 percent.
That’s according to a statement from Sony Computer Entertainment America, which pointed out that sales of the machine had more than doubled in the fortnight since Sony slashed the price of its flagship console on July 9. The figures are based on the PS3's performance at branches of Wal-mart, Best Buy, Target, Circuit City and GameStop.
Mind you, even when taking this recent success into account, Sony's sleek platform still has a way to go before it catches the competiton in Americaland. During June, before the $100 price cut was in place, NPD sales data revealed that the PS3 sold 98,500 in the US. In comparison, Xbox 360 shifted 198,400 units in the same period, Wii 381,800, and the Nintendo DS a monstrous 561,900. Meanwhile, the PlayStation 2 (remember that?) sold 270,763.
Still, that 135 percent leap should make the July figures somewhat more digestible for Sony. We’ll report back the moment they hit the GamerSquad mailbox.
