The PlayStation Store matures yet further!
Sony has released its latest firmware update for the PlayStation 3 today, enabling a number of new features largely related to games from the PlayStation 2 and original PlayStation eras.
The update (version 1.70) means that gamers can now download original PlayStation software from the PlayStation Store for emulation directly on the PlayStation 3 (an option previously unavailable). It also allows them to use saved data from the original PlayStation format software on the Sony PlayStation Portable. In addition, vibration functionality has been added to any accessories or peripherals compatible with PS2 and PSOne titles.
Today's upgrade is currently only available to North American PS3 owners, but it's expected that the same improvements will be made accessible to European gamers and the rest of the world fairly soon.
Importantly, to maintain compatibility between games downloaded from the PlayStation Store and transferred to the PSP via the PS3, users will need to run the a new system update released for the handheld. Version 3.40 will allow for the emulation of any of the newly released PSOne titles online without any hiccups.
PSOne downloads from the PlayStation Store cost as little as $5.99 USD, while regular updates to the service, including demos and promotional trailers, are added every Thursday.
