“Not hopping on, then?” - “No, I’m waiting for the guide.”
And so the Lair debacle rumbles embarassingly on. Two days ago, you’ll probably recall how Factor 5 boss Julian Eggebrecht accused reviewers of marking down his company’s game because they disliked motion-based controls, which are used extensively in the dragon-scrapping game. That outburst was followed yesterday by outgoing SCEA bigwig Dave Karraker suggesting that it would be the views of consumers, and not the critics, that would truly matter.
Today, there’s been another development, after IGN reported that it had received a ‘Lair’s Reviewer’s Guide’, a 21-page booklet dedicated to helping critics understand the game’s intricacies a little better. After all, what would we know? Some of us have only been writing about games for, ooh, years, actually.
According to IGN, a foreword written by Eggebrecht kicks off with, "Open your mind and hands for something very different," and six of the guide’s pages are all about Lair’s motion controls.
Which is all rather missing the point, of course - it’s not that the controls are particularly difficult to understand, but that they are difficult to use, primarily due to the dragons having the turning circle of your average continent. It’s a pretty clear distinction, yet Sony just doesn’t seem to be getting the message.
