Will Snake be slithering onto the Xbox 360?
Senior Konami executive Kazumi Kitaue has offered his two cents in relation to news of yesterday's PlayStation 3 price cut in the US, and also questioned whether the discounted console will trigger the kind of sales that Sony is hoping for. Kitaue has also hinted that Metal Gear Solid 4, anticipated as a PS3 exclusive, might now also be ported to the Microsoft Xbox 360.
Speaking to the Reuters news agency Kitaue, head of Konami's North American and European operations, said that the PlayStation 3, even at a reduced price of $499 USD, was still comparatively expensive when placed alongside its hardware rivals.
"I wonder if Sony can win back user support by the price cut of just $100," offered Kitaue. "I don't expect a substantial impact. With $500, you can buy a personal computer."
Even at a discounted price point, the PS3 is still twice the price of a Nintendo Wii and $100 USD more expensive than the Premium Microsoft Xbox 360.
The senior Konami employee also explained that while the gaming firm would preferably like to keep Metal Gear Solid 4 as a PS3 exclusive, the pressure to make profit from a title with such high development costs, doubled by the prospect of a smaller than anticipated PS3 user base, could sway it into taking Solid Snake to the Xbox 360.
"Since Metal Gear Solid was born for the PlayStation, we would like to keep it a PlayStation game. But we might have to take some steps," Kitaue said teasingly.
If Metal Gear Solid 4 does go multi-platform, it would be the latest in a number of high-profile franchises that have made the leap across to Sony's rival machine. Poor old Sony.
Xbox 360 fanboys may now fall about in hysterical laughter.
