"Food shopping first, saving lives second!" (Credit: moviemuff) Developer Sierra has announced that its SWAT series is on its way to the Sony PlayStation Portable and should be available in North America this coming autumn. Entitled SWAT: Target Liberty and to be developed by 3G Studios, the new game's title hints to the notion that it just may be set in New York City.
If that sounds a little bit clichéd, fear not. Writer Scott Resenbaum, the gentleman responsible for penning the script of the television series, The Shield, has created the game’s storyline. He's also contributed to numerous other popular ventures in the 'telly box' industry, so we should be in capable hands.
Target Liberty is a third-person tactical shooter in which you play veteran SWAT team leader, Ken Thatcher. When the equilibrium in his world is shattered by the threat of danger, you must guide him and his men to settle the score as best you can. Handily, each of his comrades possesses different strengths and weaknesses which will allow you to better manage your tactics depending on the situation you face.
Firing your weapon is at any particular bad guy is a case of matching a face button with the corresponding onscreen diagram, helping to make the process as pain-free as possible. Of course, your accuracy and speed won't be top notch at first, but your abilities can be upgraded throughout the game's 12-mission single player experience. In addition, there’s promise of a four player ad hoc multiplayer mode, too, though no firm details regarding that have been released.
The SWAT series of games is a follow-up by Sierra to the Police Patrol franchise which once enjoyed success in the late 1980s and early 1990s, but steadily decreased in popularity as the new decade wore on and videogaming technology development improved.
