"Kick, punch, it's all in the mind!" Ahhh, yes!
Sony Computer Entertainment America has announced that PaRappa The Rappa will be making an appearance on the PlayStation Portable, a decade after he taught the world how rhythm-based videogames should be made on the original PlayStation.
Essentially, the new PSP title pays homage to the groundbreaking 1996 original, but builds on its achievements by adding a host of exclusive features for its release on Sony's handheld console. These bonuses include the ability for up to four PSP systems to go head-to-head in ad-hoc battles; wirelessly share a demo level through Game Share; and use the PSP's Infrastructure mode to download a total of eight additional playable remixes for gamers to rap along to.
“Bringing PaRappa The Rapper to PSP allows true PlayStation fans to re-connect with this timeless classic,” said John Koller, Senior Marketing Manager at Sony Computer Entertainment America. “This also introduces the beloved PaRappa and his cast of colourful friends to a new generation of fans and potential hip-hop stars on the move.”
Despite a vast difference in technological power, the PSP version of PaRappa the Rappa aims to stay true to the original's flattened animation techniques (think Super Paper Mario), sharing its touches of subtle humour and a storyline that sees the title's protagonist attempting to rap his way into the arms of his crush, Sunny Funny. After being taught basic techniques at each stage by the Masters, players may earn the opportunity to rap freestyle and really show off their skills.
PaRappa the Rappa was one of the most charming and engaging titles available for the original PlayStation so, if time has treated it well, the new PSP features should make it just as (if not more) enjoyable than it was all those years ago when it arrives at retail this coming July.
