A 'Crysis' for PC gaming in the next few years?
DirectX 10, Microsoft's multimedia and graphical videogaming anchor, arrived with the firm touting another forward shift in the kind of aesthetical wizardry we could soon be seeing from PC games, but Epic Games' vice president has told CVG that he reckons developers and publishers aren't going to wholeheartedly jump into bed with the technology for a number of years yet.
"To be honest, and I'm going to cast a small pall on the industry here, I don't think you're going to get much higher until the next generation of consoles," said Rein when asked what we can expect from DX 10 beyond what we're seeing in Crysis.
He cited the huge gulf between low-end and high-end PCs at present, making PC development a lot less economically viable.
"And in addition, just now we're just barely coming into the sweet spot of the next-gen consoles... We're at the point where it's viable to ship games on these next-gen consoles and it's going to be a gold mine for a couple of years. “
He added that developers are going to want to plump for creating games on the Sony PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360 rather than the PC, even if it means restricting themselves from the limits of their known graphical capabilities.
