Gamestop, taking the name a little too literally.
The gossip kings (and queens) at Kotaku are reporting that Gamestop is presently withholding Wii stock until 17 December. This sort of hoarding is nothing new, since it was revealed that Best Buy were allegedly doing the same thing last week.
The move to sit on the Wiis seems to be an attempt to spur-on sales for the final weekend before Christmas—even though there’s another one of those the following week, but essentially for safety’s sake and to ensure those sales get boosted, using the weekend of the 17th is pretty smart.
Apparently, Gamestop has been told not to tell anyone is has Wiis sitting in the stock room (unless it’s one of the world’s largest gaming gossip sites obviously) and that it’s not allowed to even say they’ll be on sale come 17 December.
Kotaku isn’t stupid either, swinging to the same conclusion we did when we heard this little tale of woe. Could this be just a sad attempt to lure a load of people into the store, who, when unable to bag a Wii, will instead opt for something else in-store instead? Either way, it’s totally lame, just sell them already!
