I'm smiling, but I'm not happy!
Keita Takahashi, creator of the simplistic and addictive Katamari series, has publically gone against the grain of opinion on the subject of Nintendo's next-gen Wii console by stating his relative scepticism concerning its supposed merits. Pointing out Nintendo's overplayed focus on the Wii's innovative control system, Takahashi is quoted as telling Gamasutra.com, "I'm not really interested in [it]. I don't think a controller should have that much influence on the enjoyment of games." He further outlines concerns that border on the belief that Nintendo is walking the gimmick tightrope by saying, "I see what [Nintendo is] trying to do, but they're putting such emphasis on the controller: 'Woah, this controller lets you do this!', and I'm thinking 'are you messing with us?' So, there's nothing I really want to do with it right now."
While also talking to Gamasutra.com, Takahashi later discussed the news that he won't be onboard for any new Katamari game presently planned by Namco, although the series' Japanese publishers insist that the project needs him, citing that the franchise may well be at an end without his participation. "I know I won't be working on it right now," said Takahashi, "but I think Namco will probably continue it. It's still a viable franchise."
Where Takahashi goes from here is presently a cloak and dagger affair, and he's playing his cards typically close to his chest. "All I can say is that it'll be on a next-gen console, and, uh, it will be fun! That's all I can say," If it's half as much fun as Katamari, then the gaming world will surely be a happier place.
