Carmack: Wii is "a spark of newness."
Since its launch, the Wii has enjoyed a genial reception from those in the development community, who often lavish it with praise for its fresh and innovative approach. Oh sure, there’s been the odd doubter, but mostly it’s been smooth sailing.
Having said that, one big name we didn’t expect to see praising Nintendo was id Software co-founder John Carmack. Carmack has been critical of the Kyoto giant on more than one occasion in the past, but not for much longer it would seem.
After announcing a Nintendo DS version of his mobile phone game Orcs & Elves back at E3 in July, Carmack yesterday told a packed QuakeCon audience how he was "really happy" for Nintendo, and suggested that he’d quite like to see Orcs & Elves on the Wii, which he described as "the key to me finally getting my hands on that eighth Ferrari" "a spark of newness."
"I hope we can do a Wii game with Orcs & Elves," he said. "We're not going to see Rage [id's just-announced new project that we reported on here] on the Wii, but I'd be happy to see some other stuff on there."
Another developer’s heart won over by Nintendo’s little white console that could. Welcome aboard the bandwagon, John; it’s crowded, but we’ll find you a nice, cosy spot.
