‘Lesbo’ - offensive, AND only a crummy seven points. (Credit: Ai Pohaku) Remember the brouhaha that was kicked up a few months ago, after Ubisoft included a distasteful term for disabled people in its Nintendo DS game, Mind Quiz? Well, it’s happened again, and once more it’s Ubisoft getting up the noses of Daily Mail readers everywhere.
The game this time? Junior Scrabble 2007. The term? ‘Lesbo’. However, unlike Mind Quiz, Ubi won’t be yanking the offending game from shop shelves, and has instead opted to simply apologise to customers who bought the game. In an official statement, the firm also attempted to defend the inclusion of the word, pointing out that, "‘Lesbo’ is not considered as offensive by the official dictionary and therefore is playable in both [adult and junior editions of Scrabble DS]."
Much huffing and puffing has taken place since the discovery of the term by a player in Belfast, with one Gay Rights Association spokesman proclaiming that, "the young men who design these games are not taught by schools that these words can be used as a form of homophobic bullying."
Hmm, time to hire some new QA chaps, Ubi?
