(Credit: Josh Bancroft) More sales news now, this time for the Nintendo DS which, it has been revealed, has sold an amazing 3 million units in the UK in just two years. The handheld's innovative touch screen functionality and varied selection of accessbile titles has made the machine popular with a wide spectrum of consumers across both genders and all ages - not just the typical videogaming demographic of children and young men.
"It's a great testament to the strength of the DS hardware and software range available, that just as Nintendo DS has passed its second birthday here in the UK, it reaches such a landmark sales figure", enthused David Yarnton, General Manager of Nintendo UK.
The Nintendo DS' sales have been boosted massively by the success of the company's Touch! Generations games, such as Brain Training and the numerous Nintendogs titles, which have successfully tempted those who have never previously been interested in videogames, and hopefully shown them the kind of unique entertainment that the industry provides for its fans.
Nintendo hopes to further this strategy with the Wii, on which it plans to release the same sorts of 'games for non-games' tailoring the wizardry of the Wii Remote to the desires of videogaming virgins and hardcore players alike.
"With many more Touch! Generations games launching in 2007, Nintendo DS and Wii will continue to be the main driving forces behind the expansion of the video game market this year," added Yarnton.
Recent figures from Japan show that the Nintendo DS is performing extremely well in the region. Gamersquad has already reported how the machine was outselling its closest rival, the PlayStation Portable, by three-to-one and how its titles dominate the Japanese all-format charts.
