The pretenders to the throne have had their brief moments of glory, it is now time for the only true sporting monarch to once again reclaim its throne and sit, unrivalled, as the magnanimous ruler of the American Football genre.
In case we lost you there, we’re saying that lesser gaming efforts have trawled the consumer market looking for traction as of late, but now it’s the turn of Madden NFL 08 to, you know, show ‘em how it’s done.
While ‘real’ football might be the most popular sport on the planet – to the point of inciting friendly riots of violence where rival supporters clash openly in the streets and warmly participate in territorial bloodletting – American Football is the grand day out, the family gathering, and the trunk-bound barbeque. And it can certainly hold its own in terms of popularity, especially in the videogame arena.
Indeed, while the likes of EA’s FIFA and Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer series perennially kick hell out of each other, EA’s Madden has long been the only genuine American Football experience worth splashing the cash for – nothing else has even come close over the years.
That said, 2K’s recent All-Pro Football 2K8 made a decent enough effort to wrestle free some of that loyal and purist fan base, as did Madden’s college-inspired stable mate NCAA Football 08. But Madden remains untouched, waltzing gracefully through crunching tackles from the competition in order burst free into the endzone once again to revel in the adulation of the winning score.
