The PlayStation 3 has been given an unfair ride as of late, labelled as an excessively expensive piece of kit that forces consumers to adopt a bundled HD player that’s still to gain market traction. Beyond the pricing and Blu-ray quibbles, some folk are also slamming Sony for the supposed lack of quality software presently being endured by the PlayStation 3 – and also a gradual loss of exclusivity beside the Xbox 360.
Admittedly, while the PS3’s killer app software candidates (namely Metal Gear Solid 4 and Killzone 2) won’t be arriving until 2008, and a fair few exclusive franchises have migrated to Microsoft’s platform (GTA, Devil May Cry amongst them), that’s not to say the PS3 is devoid of tantalising exclusive software between now and the end of the year.
Heavenly Sword, Lair, Warhawk, and Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, all immediately spring to mind to tempt the discerning PlayStation 3 owner. And what about Folklore?
Exuding all the rendered quality and storytelling prowess of Resident Evil or Silent Hill, the Gaia-developed adventure (brainchild of Shin Megami Tensei creator Kouji Okada) looks like a real-time action title that’s packed with RPG leanings and takes an element of its battle inspiration from the Ghostbusters franchise.
Truly beautiful aesthetics ably showcase the PS3’s graphical powers while the in-game design, battles, and atmospherics also appear to be little short of top-drawer. Of course, with Folklore’s creepy journey to the netherworld not due to arrive at retail until October 09, there’s still plenty to still see by way of marketing and publicity.
Still, Folklore certainly appears to be one to watch for those PS3 devotees eager to level the (currently uneven) playing field against mocking Xbox 360 fanbois intent on writing off Sony’s next-gen powerhouse.
