Traditional platform titles (and their respective characters) have taken somewhat of a disappointing backseat against the constant progression of 3D animation and the environmental depth that subsequently creates. You need only look at SEGA’s once proudly iconic Sonic the Hedgehog to see what can become of videogaming greatness – though, to be fair, Sonic and the Secret Rings went some way to affording the spiky blue-haired goon an element of respectability after a tirade of mediocre releases.
But poor old Sonic isn’t the only platform casualty of the next-gen war, and while Mr. Mario has successfully managed to reinvent himself (again) through pure innovation and timeless appeal in Super Paper Mario on the Wii, a certain brain-damaged bandicoot has been looking all too worse for wear these last few years.
However, Radical Entertainment (Scarface, Hulk: Ultimate Destruction) is bringing Crash Bandicoot back – marking his first foray onto next-gen consoles – in another attempt at conquering the 3D world, and maybe this time the little critter might actually pull it off. Here’s hoping.
In the humorously named "Crash of the Titans" professional nefarious evil-doer Dr. Neo Cortex has transformed all the animals of Crash’s home island into lumbering monstrosities. Through his quirky blend of apparent insanity and obvious heroism, brave and barmy Crash quickly discovers he is able control these dangerous titans and turn their powers against one another. Yet, Dr. Cortex is unlikely to stand by while Crash dismantles his plan, so Crash had best be on guard if he wants to save the island as well as his own bright orange skin.
Man, we hope this one doesn’t suck. Crash of the Titans is scheduled to appear in October 2007 on Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 2, Nintendo DS, and PlayStation Portable.
