After all the pomp and ceremony of Microsoft’s E3 press conference, Nintendo’s stage presentation seemed somewhat low key as Big Reggie Fils Aime walked the gathered attendees through the company’s major up-and-comers.
For the most part, Reggie didn’t reveal much that we don’t already know about – though the announcement that Mario Kart Wii will be arriving (with online multiplayer) in the first quarter of 2008 was certainly welcome news. A couple of notable unveilings took place games wise, but it would appear that Nintendo is pushing hard on the ‘alternative’ route with the Wii.
That manifested itself solidly through WiiFit, a pressure pad fitness regime built specifically for the Nintendo Wii and incorporating Mii mini-games in order to gently whip couch-bound users into shape… no doubt so they can take on the all-action role of Samus Aran in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, which got an intriguing live demo walkthrough showcasing the Wii’s intuitive controls.
Note: it must also be said that Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Mario and Sonic Olympics were given disracefully short show time... which isn't worth bringing to you here.
Again, most of Nintendo’s trailer coverage centred on games we’ve been waiting ages for, which included Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy, and Endless Ocean. Along with those came the likes of Fire Emblem: Goddess of Dawn, Mario Strikers Charged, Donkey Kong: Jungle Climbers, Donkey Kong: Bongo Blast, Rayman Raving Rabbids 2: Around the World, and two new official peripherals called the Wii Wheel and the Wii Zapper.
