Coleco in name, but SEGA in nature
It seems that Coleco has released a new handheld gadget that incorporates quite a few old SEGA classics. It has to be said that this was a little disappointing because when you see the Coleco brand it’s fairly easy to leap towards Colecovision and its games. On looking at the games list that the Coleco handheld comes with, it’s sad to say it’s not the classic Colecovision titles, but rather a bunch of rehashed SEGA titles. Not that there’s anything wrong with SEGA titles—obviously—but it would have been nice to see some Colecovision classics like Jumpman making their way to a handheld.
That aside, the handheld gets no mention on the official Coleco website, so that in itself is rather strange. Online news of the device is all-but hushed also. Perhaps no one really cares?
Here’s a list of the games it comes preloaded with:
Sonic Drift 2
Sonic Triple Trouble
Alex Kidd in High Tech World
Alex Kidd in Miracle World
Altered Beast
Assault City
Astro Warrior
Aztec Adventure
Bomber Raid
Columns
Ecco II: The Tides of Time
Fantasy Zone
Fantasy Zone: The Maze
Global Defense
Kung Fu Kid
The Ninja
Penguin Land
Quartet
Snail Maze
Super Columns
Doesn’t appear to have diddly-squat to do with the Coleco brand really does it? It’s actually far closer to a Game Gear. It’s all so confusing, but then apparently Coleco doesn’t have the publishing rights to most of the games that appeared on the original Colecovision—which makes us want to cry. If you really want to play these SEGA games on the Coleco branded device, it will cost you $50 for the privilege.
GamerSquad won’t be bothering.
