Rumours of a second price drop for the Sony PlayStation 3 in the UK have been rife over the past couple of weeks, and now Pocket-lint reports that it has learnt that Sony will lower the price of the 60GB PS3 as well as announce a 40GB version of the console for Britain tomorrow.
Confirmed by "multiple sources in the games industry in the UK," the site writes that the price of the 60GB model will drop by £56 GBP to £369, while the recently introduced Value Pack (which included an extra controller and games) will be phased out.
"Although we aren't sure when in October it's happening we are aware that the price will drop to £369, with shops probably selling for £349, and a 40GB model launching as well to compete against the Xbox 360," a major games publishing source said.
As previously hinted at, the 40GB PS3 will be the same as the 60GB build, but lack two of the four USB ports and the backwards compatibility chip. The latter is unlikely to affect UK audiences, however, since that function is performed via software updates.
Could this be the ticket Sony needs to boosting and sustaining sales of the struggling console during Christmas and beyond?
