[The] At World's End videogame from Disney Interactive Studios invite players to "live and die by the sword" as they venture to the worlds of the films and beyond while playing as Captain Jack Sparrow, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann. [Disney Interactive Studios]
If you’re fond of annually emptying your bank account for the sake of acquiring a little more of the Hollywood summer blockbuster season – in a videogame format – then this summer is going to leave you broke (and, we venture, possibly a tad disappointed).
Spider-Man 3 has already had its critically panned moment at the top of the consumer-controlled gaming chart, while Shrek the Third (particularly poignant when said in an Irish accent) would like a stab at the title, as would the likes of Transformers: The Movie, Ratatouille, and Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer, all of which are looming ominously on the release horizon.
However, it currently falls to the swaggering implausibility of Captain Jack Sparrow and his motley crew to tempt you free of your hard-earned loot in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.
When considering a purchase for this particular movie tie-in, remember this in regards to mankind’s lack of infallibility: to err is human, but to arr is pirate!
Raid the Treasure or Walk the Plank? Oscar or Raspberry? Spend or Lend?
65% - IGN - "At no time during our adventure we’re our minds collectively blown, but there were certainly high points during the game, making it worthy for a rental or used purchase."
62% - GameZone - "Another licensed movie game of lackluster quality and play-value. Although being true to the feel of the films, the gameplay is dreary and the control scheme is unrefined."
50% - GameSpot - "The dull, repetitive combat and uninspired mission structure prevent At World's End from being much fun."
40% - Yahoo! Games - "Despite what high-school productions of Macbeth may illustrate, swordfighting is actually pretty hard work. So is making a good movie-based video game. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End for Wii fails at both of these tasks, and leaves you with a metaphorical pain in the neck and an all-too-real pain in the shoulder."
30% - GameSpy - "If At World's End had standard combat controls, it wouldn't be a great game, but it'd be solidly mediocre. As it is, it's just no fun to play. Even the biggest Pirates fan will quickly grow tired and toss in their "Dead Man's Chest" DVD to watch while they place an ice pack on their shoulder."
