The PlayStation Portable is often criticised as serving little more gaming purpose other than being a convenient port point and profit squeezer for existing PlayStation 2 titles. Fairly or unfairly labelled, given the general lack of genuinely original software available on the sexy little handheld, no one can possibly point such accusatory fingers in the direction of PaRappa the Rapper.
That’s right, here’s one musically charged videogame that does NOT come from the PlayStation 2 back catalogue. Nope, there’s no PS2 gravy train running on these (rap) tracks, no sir. Of course, that’s mainly because PaRappa the Rapper is a PSP rehash of a classic PSOne game – well, a change is as good as a rest, eh?
So, get ready to "Punch, kick, it’s all in mind" all over again along with some obligatory extra gameplay content to poorly justify the asking price. Needless to say, GamerSquad isn’t impressed, but that matters naught, because it’s only the real gaming critics that can pass judgement on everyone’s favourite 2D rapping dog-type-thingy.
82% - GameBrink - "Parappa has aged well, with the storyline and music still as amusing as ever. The simplistic game play is still fun, although the game feels shorter now that it did in its original release, mainly due to all the other rhythm games released since that time offering more content."
80% - Game Informer - "This is a classic in my book, and I'd love to rate it higher than I am. However, time marches on, and by today's standards PaRappa isn't the top dog anymore."
70% - GameSpy - "Definitely worth another few play-throughs. However, it's depressing how little Sony added to this package."
70% - 1UP - "While it's always nice to have a good rhythm game on the go, PaRappa on PSP is still a serious value proposition at $30. There are plenty of extra remixes to download and play (about half of which are decent), but with essentially six levels it's still a more flimsy package than current gamers are accustomed to."
70% - GameDaily - "Sadly, that sums up all the new content. Players can beat it within an hour and never play it again."
