Not exactly Ganondorf, Bowser or Ridley, is he? (Credit: LaughingSquid) To say we’re looking forward to EA’s Simpsons game would be an understatement of gross proportions. If ever a TV show has deserved a worthy tie-in videogame (and before anybody suggests it, this writer maintains that the 1991 arcade game has aged badly), it’s America’s favourite jaundiced cartoon family.
Early impressions seem to be positive as well, with the game apparently mirroring the referential nature of the TV show, and having a dig at every notable game cliché out there. According to initial hands-on reports, the likes of Grand Theft Auto, Batman, Medal of Honor, Everquest and even EA itself are all targets for the game’s merciless mickey-taking.
Yet just when you thought things couldn’t possibly get any more achingly self-referential or postmodern, beardy Simpsons creator Matt Groening has revealed that he will be a final boss in the game, which is due later this year.
Speaking to Eurogamer at an event staged to celebrate The Simpsons Movie, Groening revealed, "Well, the videogame is mainly written by great writers, Matt Selman and Matt Warburton - I mean, you can just tell. Great, right? They did a send-up of videogames. It's a videogame about videogames; and I'm in the videogame.
"I'm a boss that you have to fight at the end of the game. It was really fun recording a million ways of dying, going 'UGGH, ARGGH, EUURGH!'"
The Simpsons Movie is released in cinemas in all regions later this month, though the game has yet to be dated.
