It might be a tenner, but we're too weak to resist.
Lists documenting the best games ever are widespread, and the latest comes to our attention courtesy of esteemed UK-based multi-format games magazine Edge.
More specifically, the list was assembled by readers of the magazine, "creatives working in the videogame industry" who were approached by the mag¸ and by the magazine’s own editorial team. And while the game occupying top spot is perhaps predictable, there’s some surprises in store elsewhere in the top ten, which is all that Edge publisher Future is letting us view before the publication appears on shelves tomorrow.
The result of Edge’s graft is a fine-looking, 260-page collector's book entitled 'Edge Presents: The 100 Best Videogames', which goes on sale from July 3, with a cover price of - deep breath, here - £10 ($20 / €15). A fair-sized entrance fee, but curiosity will defeat us - we can see it now.
You can check out the top ten below (no Final Fantasy VII is a slight surprise), but you’ll have to try and sneak a crafty read in at your local WH Smiths tomorrow if you want the next ninety (or you could always take a closer look at the front cover for clues):
