Capcom has this week revealed that Lost Planet: Extreme Condition and Dead Rising—its two Xbox 360-exclusives—have both globally shipped a cool one million units each, which places Capcom as the Xbox 360’s most successful Japanese software creator.
The million attributed to Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, the snow-bound sci-fi action spectacular, is especially impressive as the game has only been available since 21 December (Japan), and most recently the 12 January (Europe and North America). By comparison, Dead Rising, the mall-bound zombie-killing spectacular, has amassed similar numbers since its release in the summer of 2006.
For those torn between the two games (why not buy both?), allow us to elaborate by way of quick summation:
Lost Planet: Extreme Condition combines a "gripping single-player campaign and intense multiplayer modes" alongside online Xbox Live support that offers action for up to 16 players. Cited by Capcom as "an epic gaming masterpiece", Lost Planet pits the player with the hard-fought elimination of the terrifying hordes of Akrid that are indigenous to the icy planet humanity is attempting to colonise. Taking "full advantage of the unprecedented power of Xbox 360" and duly delivering incredible levels of detail amid sprawling and inhospitable environments, players must battle against not only hostile creatures, but also hostile conditions as they navigate vast snowfields and deserted cities on foot or in armoured Vital Suits.
An obvious homage to George A. Romero’s classic Dawn of the Dead, Capcom’s Dead Rising is "an action horror game" that follows photographic journalist Frank West in his pursuit of the gore-soaked story of a lifetime in a small, innocuous suburban town called Willemette—which just so happens to be infested with zombies. Trapped in a local shopping mall, which is also overrun by the undead, West has just 72hrs to "unravel the mystery behind the catastrophe and survive" against impossible odds. Best described as GTA in a mall, with zombies, access to hundreds of weapons, thousands of gallons of blood, and a wisecracking sense of humour, Capcom’s Dead Rising is a free-roaming third-person epic guaranteed to get the (living) heart pumping.
