A rocket from right field for those at Digital Illusions Canada
Only a matter of days after officially acquiring Swedish developers DICE, Electronic Arts has announced the immediate closure of DICE’s Ontario-based arm Digital Illusions Canada.
Speaking today to GamesIndustry.biz, EA’s head of communications, Tiffany Steckler, confirmed Digital Illusions Canada’s closure by saying, "In Canada we have three locations—Burnaby, Vancouver, and Montreal—so we didn’t need a development studio in Ontario."
Though she also attempted to pad the bombshell for those staff about to be displaced by claiming other positions within EA were being considered. "Many of the staff from that office are now being interviewed for positions at either EA Canada or elsewhere, and the work that was being undertaken at Ontario will now be transferred to Stockholm, back to the Digital Illusions team in Sweden."
Electronic Arts currently employs more than 1000 staff members at EA Vancouver, which is responsible for some of the publishing giant’s leading franchises, including Fight Night, SSX, FIFA, and Need for Speed.
EA’s seemingly endless expansion saw the company reveal this week that it had secured acquisition of DICE, developers of the famous Battlefield series, following a prolonged relationship that dates back more than two years.
