"Soooo, we're going cross-platform." - "Yeah, and we're also about to die, idiot."
Gearbox Software (the brains behind the upcoming Brother In Arms: Hell's Highway) has announced itself as the latest developer to embrace GameSpy's online technology, which now comes as standard with Epic Games' Unreal Engine 3 technology, reports CVG.
GameSpy's deal with Epic enables "seamless PlayStation 3 and PC online functionality. Functionality available to Unreal Engine 3 licensees via GameSpy will include cross-platform gameplay, communication tools and competition applications."
In addition, Codemasters is also known to be making use of the technology in its upcoming first-person shooter Turning Point: Fall of Liberty, which is set in an alternate world's WWII. As well as cross-platform play the package allows software houses to implement the likes of leaderboards, tournaments, and other community-centric features within their titles.
The PlayStation 3's answer to the Xbox 360 and Windows' Live service is also rumoured to be compatable with the upcoming Unreal Tournament III, with Epic's Mark Rein saying: "It's a feature that technically works today, but whether we enable it or disable it... is still a question."
Add it in, Rein. You know it makes sense.
