It's getting hot in here!

Remember back in November of 2005 when Microsoft’s Xbox 360 launched and a minority of consumers complained of overheating problems? And remember the resultant wave of belittlement from Sony execs and fanboys (and girls) as they jumped with joy and berated their MS-loving brethren? Well, it seems like the tables are about to turn, because Sony clearly isn’t as clever as it would like us to think.

The PlayStation 3 has, thus far, been blighted by far more teething problems than the Xbox 360 ever suffered, but Sony of course say otherwise. Despite various industry folk suggesting the PS3 is difficult to work with and develop for, is prone to crashes, is underpowered, overheats, and otherwise is a bit of a boxed dog—Sony beg to differ. There were no frazzled PlayStation 3 consoles at this year’s Tokyo Game Show, eh? People didn’t really see those, then?

Sony denies any problems with the PlayStation 3 in terms of overheating issues, just as it’s denied all the other negative things the industry and concerned gamers—such as GamerSquad—have had to say. And, let’s face facts for a moment, we already know if Sony claims something to be untrue, then it’s categorically untrue, because Sony is a company that never lies or bends the truth. We all know that, right?

"SCE can categorically deny that there aren’t any problems with PS3 units overheating," said the company in a statement issued to GamesIndustry.biz. "As could be seen on the TGS floor by the tens of thousands of media and public attendees, both the hardware and software worked flawlessly."

Yeah, okay, other than quite a few attending media outlets reported worrying machine crashes and portable fans being used to cool down those PS3s left on for multiple hours, which would perhaps indicate that “flawlessly” is a tad overstated, Mr. Sony.

PS3 CAN SUCK IT!!!
Posted 748 days ago by BryReply

After almost a month of playing, my PS3 has finally died. I am one of those guys that takes my hardware to the limit. I've seen how far my Accord could go without an oil change (30,000 + miles), and my GameCube wasn't rebooted or turned off for almost a year...never quit on me. However, this is the first console I've ever owned that's been this problematic. First problems I saw were with Call of Duty 3 and the game just kept freezing up...happened about 5 or 6 different times. That's also when I saw it just shut off and I couldn't turn it back on without unplugging the cord. I saw this same behavior a couple of times with Resistance, and now when I went back to Call of Duty 3, it finally just died completely. It is located on top of a speaker now that is about 5 feet tall, so there's no heat next to it and it's above all other items. I'm going to go return it for a new one, and hopefully there is a cooling unit out there. The bottom line is the unit does overheat. My Wii works perfect.

If the PS3 overheats, fan packs will be released just as they were for the 360. The CELL processor has the power of 13 processors in 1, so it could be expected to overheat. Use a fan and get over it, white boy.

"The CELL processor has the power of 13 processors in 1" What are you comparing it against? My laptop has a 3.2GHz HT processor. My 92+ calculator has a 20MHz processor. This means that my laptop has a processor that has the power of 327.68 processors, and it never overheats. I would rather have a console with "less power" that can play a game for hours on end. Having a system that has "more power" is useless if it continues to overheat. Did my 360 overheat? Yes. Did I call Microsoft? yes. Did they give me any bullshit? No. Did they pay for overnight shipping both ways and replace it with another 360 in under a week for free? Yes.

I picked up a PS3 two days ago. It is overheating and will be shipped to Sony for a fix. According to the Sony Customer Service, the suspect is the cooling fan. I do not know if they are going to replace the fan with a higher output fan or what. No one should expect a new computer based product to be bug free. Atleast Sony is very responsive to take care of the problem.

PS3's (sku# 938651) sold by Samsclub supposed to be bundled with three games. However, for some reason, they are missing in the package. Sams is aware of this. Customers who run into this need to go and talk to the store manager and request games be either provided from the store stock, if available or arrange for shipment to the customer. Customer need to take the initiative in the matter.

Why are obvious Xbox fanboys writing articles about the PS3 anyways?
Posted 736 days ago by MattReply

I have a PS3. I tried watching the included movie, and we couldn't get 1 hour into the movie before overheating. I tried playing blazing angels, and couldn't make it through the 1st stage without it overheating. I hope sony is responsive about fixing mine too.

I never followed up with my overheating story. My machine overheated, Sony gave me no difficulties with an exchange/repair. I was inconvenienced, but other than that, no problems.
Posted 439 days ago by KenReply

I have never read such a bias article. The writer should have just said "I hate PS3 just because i'm a 360 fan." then the article would have been over and it wouldn't have wasted anyone's time. All entry level systems have trouble, thats to be expected. I see what the writer means by the cocky attitude from Sony but this is the same attidude as Microsoft and Nintendo.

Does anyone here know if this overheating problem can do serious damage to the internal mechanics of the PS3? I'm a little worried about mine, my PS3 gets really hot in the back but doesn’t seem to have any problems after I have played Resistance for about 2 hours straight. But I don’t want to F it up.
Posted 715 days ago by JohnReply

OK this is how it is, My PS3 stands up on a stand in the open, I''ve played Resistance for at least 6 hours on end with no problem, the only ONLY time it''s ever overheated is when I put it in a space with little ventilation and played for 4+ hours... So moral of the story Keep your PS3 in a well ventilated area on its end, so the reset and game tray are at the top and quit whining...
Posted 700 days ago by MischkeReply

For the Record....My PS3 played Blazing Angels for 9 hours, so far no problem. You do have to remember to place it where it can get AIR, just like any computer.

The ps3 interactives are freezing due to a programing error w/ the motorstorm demo. NOT because it is overheating. I runs Hot and if you dont hear the fan running thats because its silent.

uhhhhh.....but the ps3 doesn't over heat.i got one; is hot but its a new f$%^in technology. it doesn't over heat and brake like the xbox 360 pluss the xbox 360 is f%*&ing noisy.

I recently attened CES. Seeing about 40+ PS3's used for demos at multi booths. running for about 10 hours straight mostly Fall of man. The main problem people have with overheating, is they dont give, the min. 4" clearance all around the system. I believe the main problem is with the case design. they tried to make it to perrty, and are suffering.

As a former employee of Microsoft, I found it hilarious that the author of the article explained that a "minority" of people who bought an Xbox 360 when it launched complained of overheating. MINORITY?! You're joking right? We were swamped! It was a disaster! Not that I am defending PS3 as I don't own one, but you must be kidding! We jumped the gun with the 360. Also, in return to you, our loyal customers, we didn't even fix your problems properly. We just sent you a new system and hoped it worked, and if not, guess what?! You got another system, and another until you got one that worked. Know why we paid for the shipping? Because it didn't even dent our wallets! We overcharged you for a defective system; therefore we had plenty of money that actually belonged to you to pay for the overnight shipping. I was fired for speaking my mind about the situation, along with three other colleagues. Surely that tells you something. As far as I know, they've fixed the problem now, but I for one will never trust the corporation again.

"The PlayStation 3 has, thus far, been blighted by far more teething problems than the Xbox 360 ever suffered" Bullshit. Do you see the PS3 on Watchdog, a UK consumer program? Nope, but the 360 is for its 3 red lights, also known as the "ring of death". Whats that? Consoles bricked after an update? Never seen that on PS3. It doesn't overheat - and the comments with all the "mine overheated after an hour" are so ovbiously idiots pretending to have one, lying out of their ass. Do us all a favour, stop posting shit like this.
Posted 628 days ago by TomReply

Clearly you have no proof to back up your spurious claims of "idiots" posting on this topic and "lying out of their ass". Yet, nor is there proof in the other direction either. But clearly there IS a question mark hanging over the PS3's supposed overheating, and not ALL comments posted here, and around the Web, can be from Xbox 360 fans. It is possible that some, if not most, are disgruntled PS3 owners suffering from a real problem. We'd ask you to refrain from expletives if you decide to post here again, Tom, or we'll be forced to ban your interaction.

My PS3 freezes up regularly with any game. I believe it is from overheating. It sits way out in the open in the middle of my living room, so air circulation is the not problem. Sometimes it freezes after being on for just 30 minutes! I've got the latest OS version as well. It's going back to Sony, hopefully they can fix it.

My PS3 keeps overheating and powering off even after 1hr of use, just got off the phone with Sony and I bought mine from ebay and they are telling me they are not going to do anything about it. 600 dollars down the drain, go with XBOX360, the Blue Ray video was not even up to snuff..

i brought my ps3 in january and have hardley played it. i was amazed as it was quite but after 3 months of owning it the ps3 now over heats and powers off i brought my ps3 from ebay and saved a long time to get it i dont no wheather to take it to a sony store and see what they have to say about it or save again to get 1 with a years worentey and there is no way im going to buy an x box

im writeing in again becos i said about my ps3 overheating i couldnt get it repaired as it would cost more than what the console was werth to fit the new part ect..iv now brought a uk version of the ps3 and iv had it 5 months now and it is faultless no promplems what so ever. and im now calling my mate a tosser for buying a 360 it has no chance against the ps3 and that elite version is a backup plan becos they know that ps3 is better the elite will still not have a chance against it. anyone looking to buy a next gen console buy the ps3 as its the best value for money but dont do what i did and buy it from another country with no worrenty and blow it up on a high voltage power input.

Yeah, well I'm not a big fan of either x-box or playstation and was not happy when my husband dished out over 600.00 for the PS3. But I can honestly say that after only a month of playing with the thing, it repeatedly overheats after being on only a few minutes. Sony can deny all they want to, but they basically put out a product that wasn't ready. And now I'm reading that we'll have to buy a fan for it?? C'mon! For 600 bucks, I think the damn thing should be flawless. I wish my husband had saved us 350 bucks and just bought the Wii instead.

I have had this over heating issue as well...it hasn't been something I can put a finger on...somedays it works great for hours...others is works for minutes....I just deal with it...it sucks. The one thing that truly bothers me is the wireless totally losing signal right in the middle of games. Blu-tooth...sheesh....ir/uhf would have been better.
Posted 615 days ago by BradReply

It's been a few weeks and no heating problems. (fingers crossed) But can anyone tell me if its just the sensitivity of the buttons or if there is a problem with them. my R2 button seems to toggle all by itself. And why in the world would they set up the controllers so that ANY button will turn on the system, just a bump while watching TV and on she comes. Now I keep it in the drawer of the coffee table.

OK, my input I had my PS3 for 4 days it was overheating locking up and video was getting jummpy (HDMI). I was mad as shi* about it, so back to Best Buy and returned it. I got a new one and on the way home I got a small fan from Target. I set up the new system with the fan directly behind it. After 4 hours of play at one shot no problems it was warm but still working. So I guess I am unhappy it was not made correctly but if a $4.00 fan fixes it so be it.

i'm on volume 3. I bought mine from Target. opened it up, side of ps3 plastic case broken. Volume 2, friggin overheating and shuts off after like 5 minutes of playing it. it's in the wide open, not enclosed in anything, with 2 fans blowing on it....wtf. Volume 3, well, i have to wait to comment on this one, wife is at the store returning Volume 2 as i type this, Come on Sony....600 bucks and you couldn't put in a decent cooling fan? Friggin rip off's.

My PS3 is pushing just over a month. Version 1.6 cam out and I tried the folding application just to see how long it will work before crashing. Well, I got about 3 days, and it Overheated, I went to it everyday and tried turning it on while wating for sony to send me my box to send it back to them. On the sixth day, it turned back on with a "BEEP BEEP". So I put motorstorm in it. Well after 3 days 6 hours it buckled again. Day two of it not turning on. Also notice I am now on 10 days without recieving my BOX from sony to ship back. HMMMMMMM. I love my PS3 but man, what BS to deal with.
Posted 605 days ago by EWReply

My PS3 was a launch version. It worked perfectly well until I started folding@home. Left it on for 4 or 5 days and poof, it overheated. Apparantly it's terminal. I was able to restart it a few times for short peiods but now it won't startup. I am thoroughly pissed at Sony for trying to charge me because I don't have the receipt anymore. I argued that it's obviously still under the one year warranty period and after much arguing they are sending a box. I am not happy with Sony's support.

Had my PS3 since launch day in the U.K and last night started to freeze on RFOM. Then on MotorStorm? Its not getting overheated, its sat on a granite base with nothing within 2 feet! Think ill take it back to Gamestation today and try to get it replaced after i but a flash drive to save my game data. And i bet Sony wont refund the money for that.

We just got the PS3 a few days ago. We don't own anything other than our personal computers, a PS2, and the PS3. The system played fine when it came to playing Motorstorm (Which came with the system), Resistance, and also watching Superman Returns on Blueray. Then we put in Call of Duty 3. It would play for a few minutes, and then shut off. We tried again, same problem each and every time we tried to play Call of Duty. We even went so far as to go to the store we got Call of Duty 3 from (as we couldn't get on the net to check for possible problems) and exchanged it for the same game. This time, the system shut off, and wouldn't come back on. Finally after doing some research online, we discovered that our PS3 is one of those that Sony put out that had insufficient cooling. I wonder why, after putting such a big ammount of power into the system, nobody at Sony thought to put in a heck of a cooling system. I mean c'mon, compare the PS3 to the size of just a plain ol BlueRay player. There's a big difference in size. I don't care if the system is compact or not as long as it isn't going to overheat three minutes into playing a new game. Also, considering that it only started crashing after Call of Duty was played, I'm also starting to wonder if the overheating is related to Video Output settings... MotorStorm and Resistance both support 720p HD Output, and like I said, they played fine, but Call of Duty 3 went well beyond that and crashed the system three minutes into playing.

I've had my PS3 for about a month, had not problems with it, until i played Call Of Duty 3 yesterday...3 Mins into the game the whole system turned off, i had to unplug it and wait 5 mins before it powered up again, it happen again and then was able to play the same game for 3Hrs, np...(HDMI) output...gl

WTF is wrong with the next gen? Overheat? Hardware failure? Software getting corrupted after patching? My Xbox 1 has run for over 12 hours straight, left overnight, travelled in a backpack several times... all with an Xecuter 3 modchip + X3CP and no case or cooling mod at all... I NEVER had ANY problem. F***ing corporations don't even test their stuff right anymore... damn MS damn Sony. I guess Nintendo's ok but I don't like em anyway... way non-hardcore... F**k this I'm sticking with PC. I really wanna see the beating consoles will take when DX10 comes out. I just hope they hack it over to Linux... damn Vista.

I have a PS3 and overheating occurs when you have your PS3 in a confined space. Mine was overheating when I had it in my tv-stand cabinet with the door closed. Since it was enclosed, and warm air circulating doesn't really help cool the system, my PS3 overheated. Solution: PUT THE PS3 IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA WHERE COOL AIR CAN CIRCULATE. If you want to spend extra money on useless gadgets, buy the extra fans.
Posted 533 days ago by helljorgeReply

i have yet to suffer any overheating problems with my ps3, and have had it running constantly for upwards of 12 hours (for those extra long pro evo sessions). the only visible(audible) difference is that the fan kicks into a higher gear after a few hours (and thankfully not that loud)
Posted 529 days ago by murfoReply

Mine also kicked in with the extra fans, however it was extremely loud. But it was my fault.

The PS3 does not overheat. I've had mine crunshing Folding Home the whole night. Then played Resistance for hours, then played music through NLBA, etc. It's been powered on for days. I have had no problem what so ever. My PS3 has been a great piece of hardware so far.

After just 7 weeks my PS3 won't powerup at all anymore, probably damaged from overheating. And BestBuy replacement program doesn't replace items instore anymore! Very upsetting for the kids who have to wait for regular US mail shipment of PS3 back to BestBuy and then wait up to 10 days to get instore credit to go buy another. My advice is don't run a PS3 without buying an auxilliary cooling fan - and the consumer shouldn't be burdened having to pay for something that SONY should have gotten right. Any attorneys want to get a class action lawsuit going?

Yes i am hinking about buying a PS3, but there is a problem that i've heard about, overheating. does anybody know if sony plans on fixing this problem, or if sony offers an extended warrenty like microsoft.

Sony screwed up. They should provide the extra equipment. However, keep buying PS3, I'd hate to have a repeat of the sega systems here.

I'm now on my second PS3 system. I had the first one for 3 days, then it overheated, burnt out and wouldn't even power on, so I could retrieve the rented game inside it. I took it back to best buy (in Canada they still do the in-store exchange) and got my second unit, which has worked without a problem for over a month now. I even managed to get best buy to replace the game trapped inside the defective system... That being said, I use an extra fan now and I'm careful to not have it turned on too long because it still gets warm fairly quickly...

I have had my console for the past three months with no problems at all. No overeating, games freezing, etc. I have played games for more than 8 hours straight, watch dvds back to back, and veen left my console on for more than 10 hours while downloading, still no problems at all. Makes me wonder what others are doing to their consoles or are they just lying to get the console more heat from consumers and others...

I bought my PS3 about two weeks ago. For the first two weeks I was playing RFOM with no problems. I began to play COD 3 and for the first 4-5 hours no problem. Then the system shut off all by itself. It gave no indications of overheating. I felt the unit and it was not hot. I let it cool for an hour and then attempted to play again. after approximately 5 minutes it shut off again. I have emailed Sony today to see whats up. I guess more graphics/action games cause it to overheat and inadvertently shut down the system. I cant belive sony would make us pay so much for a unreliable system. I hope I get a response from them soon about this issue.

I have been searching online for info about the PS3 overheating problems or lack of. I don’t know about the rest of you but it seems I can’t find what would be a reliable source. That goes for these cooling fans too. I hear people say they save the world and other say things like they caused their systems to crash and fail for good. Mine tends to get very warm. It makes me nervous to play for hours on end. I am also hesitant about purchasing a fan that my kill it and void any warranties. I have yet to contact Sony but I guess that is the only way to go.

lol at all these people that claim they have overheating problems. Out of all the people with the PS3, only 1% of them are defective, overheating not being a problem unless you're an idiot and put it in a closet or something. jesus if you hear anymore stories about overheating and sony not doing anything about it, don't believe them cuz they don't have a ps3. if they did, they would've sent it back for sony to fix it up. liars. love them and yes i have a ps3, no problems with it, play it 9 hours a day.

I was just wondering, I have a PS3 and been playing Ghost Recon 2: Advance Warfighters, what's the signs for the PS3 overheating? My brother has one also and he said that the power light starts blinking. The problem that I had is that when I'm playing the game mentioned above, sometimes on the loading screen it just freezes. The thing is that that's the only game that does that, I have no problems playing for hours with other games. Is the game the problem or the console?

I think this PS3 overheating thing is a bunch of BS, personally. I've literally left my PS3 running for weeks while crunching numbers for the Folding@home project with nary a problem. I put my hand behind the unit to manually feel how much heat is coming out and it's negligible. If people are using the unit in the average, air conditioned home and not blocking the airflow to the unit I don't see how anyone is having problems. Sure there's going to be X-amount of units that are defective. That's to be expected of *every* manufactured product, but from my research and personal experience the PS3 has a very low failure rate, especially in comparison to the abysmal failure rate of the Xbox 360. I own all three consoles, so I'm hardly a fanboy of any of them.

I just bought a ps3 yesterday and, after reading most of the posts, want to know if the cooling unit that I am going to purchace will take care of the overheating problems.

I don't have PlayStation 3 yet, but I was wondering, is this overheating thing true or false?

An answer would be much appreciated. Thanks!

i own a xbox 360 and a ps3 and both have pros and cons..it realy makes me angry when you get peaple who havent even played the other console but have alot to say...just shut the f@@k up and play..overheating...what bullcrap..so what just get it fixed ...x box should sort out its joy pad ...it like a big mack, and ps3 should offer us more games...

Yes the overheating thing is true. However, not worth buying an extra cooling unit for. If you keep your #$%^ out in the open it should be ok. I own both systems and they pretty much both suck balls. Only good thing is Halo for Xbox and guitar hero for ps3. I own em both so I'll bash them both. Don't fall for the trap of wasting your money on useless accesories, unless you like spending the extra money on nothing.

I've had my playstation 3 since easter now and it's always been working fine. But last niht I put in Skate and was just playing it was normal. About 10 mins later read disc error cae up on the screen. So I turned the plystation off and back on again but thistime it didn't even read the disc. I tried all my other games but none would read. Can someone help me with this problem? thanks

You have 3 options: 1.Throw your PS3 out the window. 2. Take it back to the store you bought it from. 3. Call sony directly and request a refund or a repair.

Anyone that's saying there are no issues with the playstation 3 is a fool. If you happen to be the owner of one (like myself) and you start experiencing what most people here are talking about (that somethings wrong and it looks like overheating), then I hope you'll have learned a lesson, Jackass. Maybe you're in denial because you over paid and your broke. I don't know, but my ps3 has been out of it's box for about 24 days and my experience has been that it shuts off quite regularly after only a couple of hours. Normally, I have to wait about an hour before it'll turn back on. I'm sick of it though, tomorrow I'm returning it. I've been mostly playing old ps2 games on it and I've bought and watched 2 bluray movies. Definately not worth even the reduced price of $479. I can wait. None of its games use the playstation to its full potential anyway and by the time some do (in years from now) my ps3 will have been fried/dead/burnt out for some time. What a relief it'll be after I get my money back for this turning off for no apparent reason piece of garbage.

I have a PS3, I had issues with it not reading ps3 games and sent it back, there was no overnight shipping had to wait 2 weeks. When i got the new system i played it for a month or so and now im getting the same problem. They will NOT refund me my money they just wanna have me replace it again. Why isnt anyone actually taking sony to court!!!!! theres too much talking and no action. if i dont get a refund i WILL take them to court and get more money than i paid for the system and the 3 games. Please respond if you have similar issues or questions

Well, I'd like to point out that yes the ps3 does have some crashing problems, if you'd just either A.> Stop your downloads from sony store before launching those games that freeze and/or removing your un used USB devices will stop a crash many more times than blaming overheating. on that note my 40gb model seems to kick its fan into overdrive whenever its feeling hot.

An Honest Comment.. I own a PS3 about one and half month ago, it work fine even with 6+ hours playing... most of time is OK except some occationly freezing (so I just have to restart it and it makes beeping sound) after about two times; One day when i was playing need for speed pro street for 5 hours, it suddently SHUT OFF!! and it can NOT turn back on...... Well, I thought PS3 is better than XBox 360, but... I guess it just hard to make a error-free new system

Yea i just got my ps3 yesterday and after playing call of duty 4 the ps3 got realy really hot. The good thing is i have a 3 year waranty. The ps3 shouldnt be a problem with many as long s youve gota warranty. The only thin i dont like is all the worrying and the damn loudness that comes the the console.
Posted 375 days ago by MoeReply

as a response to Scotpimp10 yes i am having the exact same problem. not only ps3 games, but ps2, one and dvd/blu ray movies neither. any game/movie on a cd will not start on my ps3. and it has happened overnight. i do not know why neither do i care, I WANT TO PLAY EA SKATE. so if what you say is true, take them to court

Yesterday my PS3 overheated. In the middle of a game my unit powered down, and upon turning it on the noise was dull and obviously on some kind of backup power for emergency.(Luckily I was able to eject Call of Duty 4) It was the second unit to fail on me, the first was total hardware failure.(Backup power wouldn't even allow for disc eject) FYI: this case can be identified by solid red light, to blinking yellow light, to solid red light; with no noise from the console. This is more rare and more of a hassle than overheating. I am still loyal to Sony, perhaps only because I bought the service plan at Best Buy. WORD TO THE WISE: BUYING A PS3???? Buy the service plan/extended warranty...it's worth it.

If my PS3 overheats, I will have no choice but to throw it out the window. Hopefully hitting someone that works for sony on the way down.

YEAH! I'm gettin a PS3! Note to all, the new PS3's chips/processors are made on a smaller die (basically they dont use as much power and dont get as hot) so now the problem is fixed.

I was updating MotorStorm v3.0, i was waiting like 2 hours, then when I want to check whether it finished, the game has freezed long time ago and I didn't noticed. It was like 25-30%, did it freezed from the PS3 or the game? And by the way, the music of the game still continued. And another thing I want to know, the MotorStorm update v3.01, what time do it finish? I think 4 hours. PLEASE answer me, thanks!
Posted 351 days ago by AliReply

I think this might have something to do with the output of the game. I just bought my PS3 and I tried the Motorstorm game it came with. The thing didn't even finish loading and it froze. There's no way it overheated that fast. On the other hand, I played Call of duty 3 for 2 hours and nothing happened untill finally, it overheated and shut off. I'm not sure what it is, but I think Sony needs to have more respect for their customers who are paying a crap load of money. Sorry to say, but xbox360 and ps3 got so caught up with trying to be ahead that they couldn't think of the simple things like a proper cooling fan. Looks like Nintendo wins. I don't even like them.

Yes, I purchased my playstation 3 just yesterday evening and myself and my younger brother have played both Orange Box and Assassin's Creed for a while, giving an hour every three for it to cool down, though unfortunately, it has crashed twice on assassin's creed, both whilst my brother was playing. Can anyone tell me, will it help to place a physical small fan near my ps3 to cool it down while playing?

I got my PS3 two days ago. I have played it non stop sometimes for six hours at a time. It finally completely overheated while my sister was playing it this evening and I wasn't home to tell her it was doing so. So it didn't get a break and it pretty much fried.. the red indicator light won't even turn on. The system is dead. I hope Sony will replace mine.. and this really is a bias article. Xbox isn't so great at all. I'd rather have a better system that gets a little hot than a Xbox that no where near over performs the PS3.
Posted 343 days ago by HollyReply

that's the problem. sony has all this power and they can't even make games that outperform or impress people more than the xbox games. i own a ps3 and an xbox. lots of the games play better for xbox. why the f*** does a system that sold for almost a grand when it came out have framerate issues/choppy gameplay. take madden for example wtf... sony better step it up or i'm going to put them in the sega category.
Posted 343 days ago by helljorgeReply

Don't get mad at Sony. It's the game developers that are having the issues with the system hardware. give them time and everything will work nice. It's when the games are made similar for Xbox and PS3 that the problems arise. Look at the exclusives and there are few to no problems with frame rate.

i have had my ps3 from day 1 (23rd March 07) and never had a problem with it - and my vents arent very open!! however i was shocked to hear that my mate got a ps3 at christmas 07 and his overheated today (4 days later) - the early ones must be made to last
Posted 341 days ago by Mark DunnReply

Like Mark I got my 60GB ps3 on the day it came out and i've had absolutely no problems with it at all. I don't have anything blocking the vents but that's just common sense isn't it? I don't think the ps3 has an inherent problem with cooling but you are bound to get a few units with dodgy fans. At the same time the aftermarket fans they make for it are cheap, 10-20 quid, so if you're worried about overheating just buy one!

My shiny new 40gb PS3 arrived from Amazon in the post last Wednesday, updated the system software etc online and by Sunday afternoon it was dead. Amazon promptly send me out a replacement console which arrived this morning, updating the system software I get an error message (8002F1C1) and contact Sony customer support who tell me that the NEW console needs to be replaced and will send me out ANOTHER NEW PS3 which should arrive by Friday. 3 consoles in the space of a week nearly... if this new one doesn't work I think I'll be looking for a full refund and leaving getting another PS3 until they've ironed out the seemingly endless "teething trouble" that many customers seem to be experiencing. Customer Support were very apologetic and helpful, I just want a working PS3 to play COD4 online.

Ok - all of you - My unit just DIED this week. It was purchased on December 5th, 2007. My unit was in a backless entertainment center, with roughly 5 feet clearance all around my unit. Plenty of Ventilation. I had heard the cooling fan go off from time to time. My apt. has a temp of 75 degrees. While playing monday nite for about an hour, I did not hear any cooling going on with my system. I left the room, and heard the "beep" the system emits when you shut it down. Saw the Flashing red light - inidicating overheating - strange. Waited for an hour - tried to power on my unit - nada. Contacted Sony, expecting the carton to return my unit on Monday. It really blows to pay $400 - $500 for something you haven't owned for barely a year! (Hey, Rangard, I feel you - this is for you. What happened to you just happened to me this week. Contact Sony - I hope you're still within warranty, or you'll be paying $145 for repairs).

Simple fact- Failure Rate of Xbox 360's: 33% Failure Rate of PS3's: 0.02% Enough said.

My friend was playing a oblivion with my ps3 and and while it was saving the system shut its self off but wit no red light for the stand by. Now the system will not turn back on and my game disc is stuck in there. I called up Sony because I bought it in November and it still was under warranty But i lost my receipt and even though I registered it they will not touch it unless I pay Sony 140.00 I am so frustrated because when I had a problem wit my xbox 360 Microsoft fixed it with no problems. I keep hearing how bad it is when xbox360s mess up but at lest they fix the problem without any questions. I only wish Sony would show better customer service and be cool with there warranty and fix my ps3. I regret ever buying a ps3. Has anyone ever had a problem like with with Sony's Customer Service? if I had to do it all over again maybe just maybe I would have listen to them Xbox and Wii fan boys. better yet maybe I would have never bought that system to begin with. Maybe I should call the better business people and complain about Sony and how I am being treated. -a very mad sony ps3 owner

Well, I am shocked-- Sony, lie? Oh never.. you know, even though during camera chats my PS3 freezes and has to be rebooted, or does it during games, or has trouble recognizing its own USB ports, or overheats.. But wow, I guess I'm imagining all these things, huh? Now, don't get me wrong, I do love the capabilities of the system, but Sony is full of crap if they deny there are problems. As for the customer service comment regarding Sony, I had one of their VCR/DVD combos and despite having it for less time than the INCLUDED WARRANTY per the package insert, despite having it registered, they wanted to charge me S&H there and back, plus repair fees since I didn't have a copy of my receipt.. and even if I'd had my receipt, I was told that somehow the warranty was already expired, and I would still be charged over half the original purchase price for repairs. So.. it's their representatives in general, not just the folks handling PS3 complaints.

OMG, NOOBS EVERYWHERE. Listen. Your ps3 will never over heat. (Depending on what you think over heat means) 1. The ps3 has a built in system that tells it to turn itself off if it "over heats" 2. Stand your ps3 up, instead of it lying down. Feel, hear see the difference after playing 5 hours straight of COD4 3. I've tried to destroy my ps3 by crashing it whilst it is saving data. - Didnt work, it refuses to break. 4. On metal gear solid 4, theres a r
